View Full Version : Pencil sharpeners
Hi Everyone,
I need to get a new pencil sharpener as mine is getting old and cranky now....a bit like me :D
What do you all use/recommend ?
Cleo :)
I use the Panasonic Auto-stop and I really like it. I got mine at Office Depot.

I have an X-Acto Powerhouse...it's great!! I've only ever had it break leads twice. I also bought it at an office supply store. Whatever brand you buy, make sure you get one with auto-stop. That doesn't neccasarily mean that it will stop cold when your pencil is sharpened, but it should do something to alert you to stop sharpening, and then it should stop cold when you stop exerting pressure. This keeps it from eating pencils. Mine actually slows down when the pencil is sharp, and you can hear and feel the change in the speed of the blades.

I use the panasonic KP310...it is fabulous! The auto stop feature is great. The blades lift away from the pencil when it's sharp, and even though the motor is still running, your pencil doesn't get eaten down to nothing. I wouldn't buy anything else. It's fairly inexpensive...I think I paid about 15 for it and have had it a couple of years now. Office Depot or Staples is where I got it...

another thing is you want one with blades like on the kp 310...something about it doesn't break pencils. I use the kp 310 and for travel use a battery operated staples brand.

I use an X-acto electric sharpner. Works beautifully for me. I never have any problem with it breaking my pencils or anything!!!! Just need to clean it once in awhile by running a graphite pencil through it. Cleans out all of the soft cp pigment that tendds to stick to the blade. Only cost me $15.00 at Hungate's.
Thanks for the prompt response guys !
I haven't heard of some of these brands. I will def. be on the look out now.
We do have Staples here ( UK ) so I think that'll be my next stop.
I have a suspicion that they may be more expensive over here :(
I'll let you know what I find
Thanks again Cleo :)

Hi Cleo -
I haven't been able to find a Panasonic anywhere in this country.
In Office World, I used to be able to get the battery operated Dahle 230 Pointy. This was great, and why it was great was because of the spiral cutter in it. You need a spiral cutter as this puts the force along the length of the pencil, not across it like the little hand twist blades with motor attached made by Jakar and others. When Staples took over Office World, they stopped selling this! They now sell the smaller cheaper rubbish. I have been looking for Dahle on the net, but not found it so far.
What I have bought, and like is a Jakar 5151 electric sharpener - online from http://www.suppliesstore.co.uk/ - came to around £40 including VAT and packing. This has an auto stop, and is really doing the job for me very well. I do know that Jakar sell this a lot cheaper, at Patchings Festival they were selling it for £25, so if you find it cheaper let me know.
