I've seen threads like this before. I thought it would be fun to post first pictures to show how we've progressed. Not that I'm all that great now, LOL, but there has been some improvement. Y'all be sure and post some too...... Don't leave me hanging.
Both of these were done with Crayola Colored Pencils ( I didn't know any better ), and Sketch Paper. My mom would kill me if she saw the bags under her eyes. And those orange skin tones..... and all the lines under her neck. No, she didn't really just survive a hanging. :blushing: :blushing:

Hmmm ya want me to dig up sumthin I did a long time ago? ack! sheesh i'm not that old....... :p :annoyed: :D

LOL, but there has been some improvement.

Of course there has!!! Don't ya know with each piece we do there is improvement?

Ya might not know it, but you've learned anyway. With learning comes improvement. Your doing great - keep up the good work, practice practice practice!!!

I've got class for now, i'll see what I can dig you up later.

Alright you asked for it Greg :D ,

The first one I did about six or so years ago and it was done with cheap pencils, I think you can at least tell what it is, LOL.

The third(sorry I loaded them up in the wrong order) was my first full CP piece done at WC and I learnt a lot through mainly Arlene's guidance, it was done with a complementary Grisaille, I really like it actually :) .

The second is my latest completed piece and was done for a Masters project headed by Arlene, you had to choose a painting you admired and then use a crop of it and reproduce it. The main aim was to pinpoint 15 colours in the original painting and then recreate them using more than one colour -so mixing your own colours with cp's. Not easy but fun in the end.

and you know what I am working on now, which also stems from a project, the next one I di will be for my dad for his birthday and it will be of an old antique bus on a country road in the winter -I hope i can pull it off.

Anyway, I hope mine show i have progressed and improved , I can certainly see it in your examples. The last two are miles better than the first two :)

Ali, thanks a bunch for the compliments. I think your first one was pretty good. Were you worried about not leaving white spots from the paper where the color should be? I was. And you got it all in. I really admire the middle one. She is really nice. The last one.... what can I say? You are very good. And to think you have a C problem, The details you get in the leaves.... I'm envious.

Your more than welcome Greg,

I dont give credit where it isn't due :) . I can't remember about worrying about white paper showing through but I do remember trying to blend those darn pencils, LOL Cheap gives you cheap results I guess.

Thanks for the lovely compliments on my work I really appreciate it :) . Well I guess the 'C' thing comes from not having much experience, I only started taking my art seriously again a couple of years ago so I dont 'feel' like a real artist yet, if you know what I mean? :)

My favourite out of mine is the lilypad one -it was my first serious piece in CP after many years away from Art all together so I guess i am proudest of that one, it was also the one that took me over three months to complete, but life got in the way mainly with that one.

My lady is a copy of a young maid in a Rossetti painting, that is why it might not look truly a real portrayal of a person but it WAS my first attempt at any kind of portrait work with CP.

The problem I have with confidence is also down to personality, I am not a very confident person anyway so I guess it overlaps into my artwork. Once I have completed a piece I can usually be more objective and see the merit in what I have created but whilst I am working on it my lack of confidence is a nightmare!!

Anyway, thanks for the kind words about my work, it is really nice of you :)

Huge hugs,

ALI

I understand about the confidence problem. Maybe someday I won't feel compelled to put a disclaimer out before I post my pics...... but not yet!! Well, I for one think you do great work. It's also probably theraputic for you too, with the health issues...... takes your mind off the pain.... and that's a good thing. ;)

Jazz
03-03-2005, 09:56 AM
Thanks again Greg -you are doing wonders for me ego if not for my confidence levels, LOL ;) .

For what its worth I really dont think you need that disclaimer, your work is distinctive because it has an individual style present, a lot of artists strive for that individual style all their careers and dont manage it, so you are already ahead of a lot of us.

I can't discern anything individually stylistic about my work yet, although I like my stuff to be bold and colourful but that is about it.

You are right -my art does help take my mind off the pain and the depression that goes along with it. It is therapeutic but then so is coming onto sites like this, where i can surround myself with fantastic art and fabulous artists and lose myself in some of the amazing WIP's posted here. I don't have time to think about my pain then I am so involved in what the artist is creating :)

Also, my art gives me a goal, because of my health problems i am unable to work so my art gives me something to get up for every morning, apart from my well loved dogs, LOL :D and the prospect of puddles on the floor if I dont, hehehehe!

It gives me a sense of accomplishment and something to strive for -to get better at my art and maybe one day make enough of a living off it to be able to replenish my art supplies myself without having to rely on Jay, which I hate having to do.

So you see my art is extremely important to me in more than one way, in fact I would go so far as to say that without it I think my depression would become dangerous.

I am looking forward to seeing your next piece of work and seeing the evident improvement from the last piece, its exciting watching a burdgeoning talent :) .

Huge hugs,

ALI

Ali, you are going to faint when you hear how I got this "style". Last year, we were in Cozumel. Have you ever seen those Mexican Spray Can Artists. I watched a guy over and over. His stuff was fascinating. All with Spray Cans, pan lids, and a knife. Marvelous stuff. Yes, all in very bright colors. Tropical Scenes, Marine Scenes, and Space Scenes. It inspired me to use the bright colors. Probably it is not techncially good art, but I liked it. So, I thought, why can't someone incorporate some of the style into colored pencil art. The answer.... they can. Now, combining that style with being photorealistic.... that's the challenge. Thanks for letting me ramble. :blushing:

Hi Greg - is working photorealistically one of your goals? Have you seen this lesson on the cp challenge site? Looks like something you might like.

I'll contribute to this thread some time - it takes work to find the old ones!

My computer won't let me go there right now. Darn, work computers. Is that the one Making Waves? That's the next project I want to start, as soon as I can build up the nerve. Working photorealistcally... yes, kinda sorta. I want the pictures to get away from cartoon type and more towards the photorealistic. I probably will want to romanticize them a little. Like in the picture referrence, the colors were mostly drab and greys. I wanted to liven it up a bit.

Yep, that's the one I was talking about! He has such a great sense of color! Go for it - that would be a great project to do!

It's absolutely beautiful and makes my heart smile. You did a fantastic job of it!

This is the final version ( I think ) of the last picture that I put on this thread. I'm ready to start drawing a egg now.

Ok Greg, here's mine...first ever cp back in 1984 (high school) pretty sure they were prismas. Very waxy, took light colors over the darks, etc. Not good paper, but you use what they give you in art class. This assignment was for us to take a famous painting and make it humorous. There's alot of creases in this and it was not fixed w/ anything so it has some definate wear to the layers, but you get the idea. :D

Sorry guys I have been a bit preoccupied BUT I am back now! :D

Greg - Feel free to ramble away, you are rambling to a fellow rambler so you are in good company :D ;) .Actually I find it very interesting to learn where your inspirations for your style come from, so never be embarassed to talk about art to me -I love it! :D I too find the Grafitti spray art amazing(when it is done well -that is), some of those artists are extremely talented, so as far as I am concerned that is an excellent source for you wanting to be bold and colourful in your art :) .

Ivy - Awww.. thank you so much for that, what an absolutely lovely thing to say that it brought a smile to your heart, WOW!! thank you :blushing: :D I am so glad you feel that I did your wonderful photograph justice :D . Thank you!

Denise - I just love your take on the Mona lisa -it gave me a laugh, I love the mix of classical and modern with a humorous twist -very clever! AND it works!!It is obvious you had an abundance of talent to start with :) .

Bill - I wish we could have seen a less blurry version of your Bambi, it looked extremely good too another one with plenty of talent to start with :)

Nicole - I would love to see one of your first CP's -I bet even that was original and showing plenty of talent already.

I can't wait to do this again in six months and see how far we have all come in that time :) . You must remember to start one of these threads again Greg in six months or so, OK?

Huge hugs to all you talented folk,

ALI

Thanks Ali. I gotta tell ya. I like how you ramble on your posts. You're very supportive of other artists, and some of us wannabe's. Have you drawn the egg yet? :D

Jazz

AWWww.. Thanks Greg :blushing: :D ,

I do try -my lifes motto is 'treat others as you would want to be treated' , so I like to receive bouyant and supportive comments and so I try and emulate that in my comments to others work, whatever their ability and however along the learning curve they are :D .

No I haven't, I tend to jump in with both feet and so my first piece was the Lilypad one you saw previously. BUT I do want to do it as I think it will help me learn some more about colour, obviously specifically about white and how to see it and portray it.

Unfortunately, I wont be able to get to that project until I have completed my leaf project and my Dad's birthday present. THEN I can do whatever I want so I will probably do the egg one then :D .

Have you posted yours yet? I would love to see it :)

Huge hugs,

ALI

Oh Greg I am sure it isn't all that bad, LOL :D

You must post it in the project thread then if you need help you will get it, don't suffer in silence. If you are finding it tough it is always best to share the problems you may be having with it and then myself and others might be able to offer you solutions, you would still be learning, OK?

Please post it in the Ova project thread? pretty please with a cherry on top? :D

Huge hugs,

Ali, well since you put it THAT way. I bought a scanner last night. Up to now my wife has had to scan the pics on her puter at work. I was getting to be a real pain. Have to hook it up tonight. May take me a while. I'm kinda of computer illegitimate...... I mean incompetent. :blushing:

what a great thread!.. and i see tons of improvements in those!

this is one reason why i tell peeps..dont toss out any work! not a sketch not a doodle, nada!, cause when you go back..and look...you can see the progress!..and it can be inspiring..

when i feel kind of stagnant? i pull what i have out and line em up to have a lil show......just for me...to give that lil boost again!..

the oldest one i have was a study for an oil painting, while working on it i stopped, cause i figured i would never get to the oil painting, i was getting to involved with the cp......so i left it unfinished......was done in '85
the owl was done about the same time..
the jay was done most likely a year or so after that..but the drawing of the wings, when i look at it now..is all off....but i like the colors..
notice how the cp colors are still fine?? years and years after they were finished...they were never sprayed..i dont spray my works with anything..i just keep em out of direct light...

If I could find that "jaw drops to the floor" icon. I would use it here. Onewhosees, you are a marvelous artist. I am so glad that you are part of this website. Thanks so much for the supportive comments. I'm ready to start new projects after all of the support.
