I wasn't sure were to put this thread so if its in the wrong section I guess it'll get moved. Anywho, my question was if anyone has ever tried Lyra skin tones colored pencils, and if they have what they thought about them. I got some over a year ago and have used them once since I'm not good with colored pencil.

I bought the set of Lyra skin tone pencils. I only use them for sketching. I use Prismas for serious portraits. I think the range of skin tones in the Lyra pencils is good but I don't like the way they layer or blend but I think I'd probably like them more if I could get a hold of a Lyra blender. They're also big and bulky and awkward to hold...just my opinion.

Orian, I moved your thread to the materials section of our site. I think this is a better place to ask your question.

I've never used Lyra pencils so I can't help you at all but it looks like Jen has given you some great feedback!

I just found these pencils too unsubtle! Like Jen said, they are big, which makes them hard to sharpen as well as hold, and they seem designed for children rather than "serious" artists - which is not to say that you can't do serious art with them, I am sure. But having tones ready made up to match particular skin types seems to me to be pointless - in different lighting conditions, the skins will all change colour anyway. Just go with waht you see.

Thanks for the feedback. Looks like they were a waste of money then, oh well. And when I thought of the question I completely forgot about this section of the boards, sorry about that.

On the bright side my free samples of Yupo paper came in yesterday. man, that stuff is smooth!

Don't think of them as a waste Orian - think of them as a challenge! Like I said, I am sure they will come in useful somewhere, there are some nice colours. Maybe not for skin tones though?

Orian,

I agree with Bob. You should keep trying. Many masterpieces were done with materials that weren't "Perfect" and you may be onto something! :-) I like the yupo too.. I tried it with some watercolor pencils and it felt cool. The pencil just slides right over the surface. I'm glad you like it too!

Bob Ebdon, Ok, but before I try a challenge, Ithink I'm going to work on trying to get the hang of regular colored pencils instead of the skin tones. Thanks for the positive feedback.

Rose, ya I already doodled a bit and you are right, the pencils just glides over the surface of the paper. I think I'm going to be stingy with it cause I only have so much, but i am for sure going to draw my next portrait on it.

Hi Orion

I don't have any input on the Lyra skintone pencils, but the yupo i'm familiar with..

I think I'll like it to.

Hehe and if you don't, you can just wash it off.... :D I've used regular watercolor on it, but not watercolor pencils. How about posting what you've done?

Forget the words 'skin tones'and just look at the colours themselves -some very useful colours there.

Cheers
