This is a picture I drew from a book on pencil drawing. Props to Gene Franks for the book and project of the Mountain Man. I looked at the copyright and and from what it said its ok to post it. So anywho, this isn't my typical style, as you can see there isn't any type of blending done.Hope you like. Comments good or bad please.

Nice job! I think I drew the sam picture a long time ago. From probably the same book. Is there an old car in a field in that book?

Hi
Looks like you did a great job :) Nice values from light to dark ;) A single stroke confuses me - going from the hat and down over left side eye ?
How do you like the hatching approach (no blending) ?
I know some pencil-artists prefer this kind of method, personally I feel I get a lot more depth when blending

Orian,

Nice job on the mountain man! I like the way you did the dark to light values and you are really coming along. I think I enjoy this approach more than the other drawings that are more like the comic book type. You have a future in drawing! Keep on practicing all the time and you will see more and more improvement! :D

I didn't want to make it to big, brother. You can see it Friday when you come home for the weekend from college. ;)

Its a seam in the hat. I made it to dark though.

I don't know how I like the hatching tecnique, I'm used to blending. Though this way makes this one look better because it helps potray that rugged mountain man look a bit better than blending it would have, I think. I guess it just depends on the picture?

Thanks. I agree with you about it being better than the comic book type drawings.

You have too much talent to let it go... keep on practicing the shading, values, etc... you're gonna be great!

Nah I got it four or five years ago, lost it, and haven't found it yet ;)

If you want some good books on how to draw people and stuff anything by Giovanni Civardi or Lee Hammond is really good. Pretty cheap too.

My brother has a book on drawing faces, I don't remember who wrote it or what its called. He took it up to college with him so I can't go look at it. I learned from that about shading the face and stuff. I'll lok into thos books you mentioned.

I love the way you've used the hatching. I have a hard time trying to keep myself from blending. I keep trying, though.

This is one of the first drawings I ever did after I retired and started drawing again. Since then I've done a couple of Mountain Men. They are such interesting subjects. The second one is my husband, Mike, done from a picture I took of him at our cabin in Utah. He makes a great Mountain Man.

Keep up the good work.

Orian,

I think you've done a great job with the mountain man. I love graphite. I haven't worked in it in a really long time, but with all the great stuff I see here, I'm gunna have to break 'em out!
