Hi there,

I saw a couple of your drawings done in pen with the pointillist approach and was wondering if you could help a beginner like me understand how this is started. My questions are mainly about spacing and how to keep the values going without overlapping... do you add color to your drawings? Could you do pointillism with colored pencils? I think your work is wonderful!

Thanks for reading the thread... if anyone else wants to add anything, please do! The more the merrier!! :-)

Hi Rose

If you are interested in the Pen and Ink Pointilism, let me know and I will explain how I go about doing it.

Rose, when I first began pointlism years ago I would lay down my values in pencil first. Then I got more confident and can see the values in the reference pic and do them from that. There is always going to be some over lapping that is the gradation to the next value. I suggest that you practice on a piece of paper like you would a color wheel only use the values of the black and white. You can also use diluted ink in your pens to achieve different values. Pencil and washes also will give you values. Once again practice, that is the key. As for colored pencil I have never tried to do pointlism with them. I have used small circles to give the piece a pointistic appearance though.

Charissa,

Thanks so much for the advice... you have such beautifully done drawings using this technique that I knew you'd have a lot to say about it. I figured cp would not be the best medium for this kind of look, but had to ask anyway.. small circles, I could try that! Thanks again!
