Hello I am still feeling my way through a new pastel surface--a mixute of pumice, paint, and gesso on gator board. This is a pastle painting I finished this morning .. all comments are very welcome.. thank you Tom
Hey Tom!
Mmmmmm yummy colors as always.
Your prepping your own surfaces now? Kewl. Are you finding your happy with this mixture, compared to the time investment it takes? Are you making a tinted support by using the paint? Just curious.
I adore the foreground. Thats where my eye keeps coming back to. The red building seems a little off perspective wise to me, probably why its not drawing my attention. Also that flat vertical line it creates on the right side seems out of place.
This piece is certainly made by the forground, the background mere supporting elements.
Over all it has a nice early morning feel to me, quietly pleasant and beautiful.

This one seems almost abstract....
The red building seems very out of place, and it just ends. it actually looks more like a billboard of a red building, with half the billboard gone. The greenish hill in the midground also feels out of balance, with the way the horizon line is sloping, as if the world is tilting.
The whirly, winding foilage and path in the foreground also give the feeling of a lot of energy, and the stark contrast in the trees do as well. The mountains seem a bit calmer, but that overcast sky, with the diagonal clouds, and the almost angry coloring, seem very ominous.
I don't find this one serene and dreamy at all...it seems filled with kenetic energy, like something is about to happen. It's very beautiful, but almost disturbing. What kind of mood were you in when you painted it? Have you been watching CNN? Perhaps I'm interpreting it through my own mood?
Tom,
I have to say I'm with Oozoo... I saw the painting when you posted it, but didn't want to comment because it seemed to deviate from the serene, calm, easygoing paintings that make me want to stare at them forever. This one did have a very dark emotion to it. It may be the support you're working on, or the directional lines and color. I'm not sure, but I didn't want to be the first to say it looked a bit busy or something. It's definitely way better than anything I could do, so take this from an amateur's point of view! :D

WOW!!! You sure DID Tom!!! This is YOU!! I love this one, it is warmed up and not as much tension as the first image. It's amazing how you can just 'do it over' and have it come out like this! Just incredible!!!

Hi TJ--I am stilll struggling a bit --trying to come up with the perfect mixture of ingredients- but I enjoy the challenge. I have been using an acrylic paint to cover the panel prior to applying the pastel ground mixture. I like the use of the 3/16 panel for fraiming and convenience. Overall it is muh cheaper than the Walllis paper I usually use. Thank You Tom

It's awesome! You really fixed it right up! Tom, I really love your work, your style and colors are so lively. I really hope you will do well with them, they would bring lots of life and joy to so many. Do you sell your work in galleries?

wow...the redo looks like a completely different work. Love it!
I did like the impressionistic feel of the first though.
The thing I think I love best about your work is the vibrancy of the colors...it makes my heart sing!
You certainly reworked it Tom, and changed the title to match. Good thing. ;)
I miss the vibrancy and the unkown in the first (but not the red building) in exchange for a passable road and a lovely field.
Still nice Tom, but just different.
you seem to be succeeding even if your still in the trial and error phase of your new support. Good luck with it.
