View Full Version : Dancers
This is a drawing I just finished (I think) ;)
I would really like to know what you think about it.
The guys face isn't as 'blotchy' looking in RL.
The likeness is not critical...just so they look human :D ...The picture was taken at a dance contest and is no one I know.
Thanks for looking.
Oh Dee you have done a beautiful job with those Dancers :) ,
Her dress is gorgeous!!! and I think there positions look good too, the only thing I am not sure about is the floor -the perspective looks off, do you know what I mean or am I making no sense?
I think it detracts slightly from the focus on the dancers, unfortunately I am far, far from being an expert so I can't really advise you as to what to do about it. PLUS I could be way off mark -I think when someone else more experienced takes a look they will be able to better say if it needs anything doing to it.
I will just say that I adore her dress and the positions look good to me :)
Huge hugs,
ALI

Hi Dee, I see a few things but would like to see the reference you're working from before I say anything.
Here's the ref, Arlene.
The guys face doesn't look right...but I'm not sure why.
Thanks.

Wow Dee! Where's you get such a wonderful photograph?
My cousin took the photo. She's very good at it and has even sold a few.
I did some PS work on it too.

oh cool. does she have a website? i love ballroom dancing.
LOL..No not her.
About all she knows about computers is how to turn one on and check her e-mail. :D
Sorry Ali,
I just came back to check this and realized I didn't respond to your post.
I'm glad you like the dress. I'm not sure about the floor. As you can see, it is diagonal in the ref. I'm not sure if it should be lighter or darker.
I like how she looks, pretty good.
But I'm not too happy with him. :annoyed:
edit for typos

Dee - you did a fine job on the figures - I agree there is something about the mans head, doesn't quite sit right, but we have so many experts here - someone will come along soon to help you out. I could be way off base and leave it to those that know, so ignore me.
I'll be watching for their comments - very interested in the figure subject and have much to learn.
And welcome !

Hi Dee!
This reference picture is to die for!! It's very good. I also very much like the dress of the woman and the woman herself. She is painted very well. Her pose is very natural and soft looking.
I do agree with you that the floor and the man are off just a tad. The man's head is not the same shape/size as in the reference I think. Especailly look at his jawline. He is young and has a very strong jawline which is accentuated by the slight tilt of his head. Also, the jawline appears to be anchored or connected directly to his ear in the painting. I would maybe tone done down the value of his nostrils and ears to make it them look as just a suggestion of these parts of the head.
I'm no expert either and others may say different.
It's a great start with an unusual composition. I like it.

To echo the others- great ref photo! The dress and the woman are very good. One thing about the man's face is the values. He's got a pretty bright highlight on his forehead which I'm not seeing in your painting. There is also a brighter spot toward the chin at the jawline. If you put it in grayscale inPS you'll see the value changes better. These things should help make his face look more realistic. Those are the things I see right off and yeah there's something w/ the floor too. Not sure how to suggest the fix though...but the experts here will come up w/ it for you.
I'll be looking for updates! :)
Denise
Thank you Norma, Genine and Denise for pointing out where you saw the problems.
I have worked on the man and darkened the floor.
Still not perfect...by any means....but better I think.
Thanks again. :)

Hi Dee
This looks super - I'm no expert also but I think you have done a good job. As regards the floor - I think there appears to be too many colours in it - I know the ref shows a lighter floor but it might look better it you darkened it slightly - but that's just my opinion.
Look forward to seeing more of your work.
Jenny
Thank you Norma and Jenny,
Jenny I did darken the floor to cover up some of the white that was still showing. You think I should go even darker?

Dee, great work you have done. :)
No expert here, however what jumped at me is also the floor and the man's face. The floor seems to bend upwards. Perhaps it is the strokes that is curved and is not straight all the way. The eye can be so easily deceived by a single curved line. This especially happens in the part that is out of focus.
The man looks better in the progress shot. It does however seem that his eyes might be a tad to dark given the complexion on the rest of his face and the other thing that caught my eye is that his lips looks a tad to full. Especially the lower lip. In the ref his lips is much less prominent and thin.
This is great. Beautiful work on the dress.
Thank you Sandy and Werner.
Werner...I know the guy isn't an exact likeness..but I reckon he'll do. :D
My dilemma is how to make the floor 'work'.
Should it be darker...more of a certain color..what do I need to do to make it better?
