Kuchwa,

You should try a few of each brand if you can get open stock, and this way you will know which ones you like the best. Many like the Prismas due to their availability and they are less costly than the Pablos and the Polychromos, but I think Dick Blick and Jerry's have all of the colored pencils (or most of them, anyway) as open stock and you can pick and choose which colors you'd like to start with. :-) That's just my humble opinion. Let us know what you choose!

Oops, didn't know you were in UK.. maybe Bob Ebdon can point you in the right direction?? Does Dick Blick or Jerry's ship internationally? Hm, would have to look into that... anyway, open stock is still my choice!

FYI, here's a thread from the ref library to help you!

Hi kuchwa,

I've move your thread to the materials forum, so you'll be in the right place for the feedback you need,

I would definately ask Bob Ebdon, and the other UK artists about whats available to you in the UK.

good luck, and have fun with the new pencils!

Never think you need lots of pencils to achieve what you're after...a limited palette of the right colors should do the job. Gemma could help you with that.

Ok, so, thanks for the replies :) . I'm thinking about getting a set of 72 karismacolour pencils and wondered what your thoughts on them would be, their made in the US so I'm hoping you've heard of them. :D

Hi Kuchwa....

All the Artists professional pencils are pretty good. It depends really what you want to draw and how you like to do it.

The Karisma / Prisma colours are great....a favourite of many US chums
these are a waxy feeling pencil with good coverage...plenty of colours too.

The Derwents....are perhaps more easily available over here. Less waxy/drier feel to them. You have a more subtle colour range...lots of earthy tones....
I use both.
Ordering from America can be cheaper.....but you can also get 24 pencil sets
of the Derwents tailored to your subject eg. portraits/landscapes etc.....
also they have reduced some of these in time for Christmas....

BTW.Ann Kullbergs site has a sale on Prismacolour pencils until the 8th...

so...happy shopping....let us know what you decide.

I'm not sure what is readily available in the UK, but I will say that for full sets, Ebay is usually the best place to buy. You can find new sets of 120 Prismas for around $60 almost all the time, and I even found a set of Caran D'Ache Pablos for $100. I'm sure the shipping would cost a bit more, but the price difference between this and retail should easily make up for it.
