I'm not sure if velour paper is good for cp or graphite, I know some pastellists like it, especially for pet portraits.
From what I understand, it is a bit unforgiving, not for the newbie or faint of heart. I *love* the look of the work I've seen done on it. Rather pricey paper, however.

**NOTE**
If you have a Hobby Lobby in your area, you might want to check their inventory!
Mine has the huge sheets on clearance. A whopping $.49 each.
I walked out with 10 huge sheets for under $5.00. Score!
Fun to try and experiement with, and no worries about "messing up" and wasting expensive paper!!

i've never used regular velour paper only the suede matboard, but I belive they are pretty close to the same.

I've seen wonderful images on velour paper done with CP. Never any graphite though.

Hi Dana
I have only used pastels on the velourpaper. It is great to work at, but very difficult to erase anything, that is one reason I haven't tried it with cp's ;) Pastels have more opacity = you can cover more easily if mistakes made. Also (it seems to me ;) ) this paper perhaps doesn't invite that much to details compared to other surfaces (watercolor Hot or Not, Stonehenge, Museumboard etc). I cannot explain clearly how it "feels" to apply colors but certainly different from Mi-Tentes and Ingres which are nice papers for both pastels and cp.
You should try it out, lets hear what your experience is :)

I believe you are correct Arlene.
But I don't think I have to yet worry about the longevity any of MY work. :blushing:

But for the price I thought it might be fun to play around with, especially since I have the urge to dabble in pastels! :p

Dana, I know that velour paper is acid free and that several top artists use it, such as Lesley Harrison. She uses ONLY velour paper for all of her wonderful pastel paintings.

I have not yet used cp on velour paper. I have, however, used cp on suede board. It works beautifully, makes the painting look very soft, but the color really sinks into the suede. I found that many layers were required and lots of light applications of fixative.

I've included a cp portrait of Marley that I did on tan suede board (you can see the color of the suede in the background). I love working on suede, but it's soooooo expensive. I go to one of my framers and get scrap pieces of suede from him fairly inexpensively - all sizes and all colors.

I'd like to see whatever you do on velour!! It will be beautiful I'm sure!! :D
