So I tried playing around with oil pastel--ended up laying down color and blending with solvent--then worked over that with prismacolor color pencils....seemed to work well but I need to buy some turpenoid and brushes so I can do more detail work....on this one I only had baby wipes to blend with and I couldn't get detail so ended up finishing with the cp's.

The paper is canson mi-teintes and here's a link to the work:

C&C welcome.

Hello, Virginia! I always enjoy your work. So glad to see you posting here.

Baby wipes? Really?? Looks like it was effective to me. This is great!

Very nice work Virginia! I went ahead and attached your image. Some folks are on dial up so attaching them instead of linking them works much better.

I really like this. It has a softness to it that is unique - it is also reminiscent of your circulism portraits - especially in terms of color choices. Those green eyes - wow.

Hi Virginia....this is lovely, as usual. When I saw the title Oil Pastels, I thought she can't mean "Oil Pastels" but of course you did. I thought oil pastels never really dried to the touch? I have never used them.

Oh--thank you--I'll remember that!

I don't know much about oil pastels--just thought I'd play around with them and see what happens. I'd read on another list that using a solvent thins it out and works well for blending so I thought I'd try it--I don't know if being used in this way will allow them to dry or not but I was able to work over them with cp.

Thank you--I do get 'creative' with color I guess, but that's the fun part of coloring! :D

Oh Virginia you dont know how happy you have made me, LOL :D

I have wanted to try my Oil Pastels for ages but didn't think I would be able to do any detail work with them but knowing the CP works with them is excellent :D

Your piece is gorgeous!! I dont think it suffered at all with not having solvent and brushes to use on it. So what kind of baby wipes are they?

You have done a beautiful job with her face, this is a wonderful piece!

What make of pastels are they? Do you think it would make much of a difference with cheaper oil pastels? I just got a cheap set to see what they were like (actually truth be known I meant to get the powdery kind but my inexperience meant I got oil ones instead, LOL :blushing: ).

Do the CP's go over the top of the pastels OK?

Sorry for all the questions, I m just so excited to see someone work with them so effectively in combination with CP's :D

Huge hugs,

ALI

Thanks! The baby wipes were perfume free for sensitive skin, then I ran out of those as I only had a few left, so I then used antibacterial hand wipes not knowing if the added chemicals would do damage but I didn't see any difference. I want to buy some turpenoid though, as I would think that would be the best product to use ...

The OPs I used are the cheapest ones I could find since I didn't know if I'd like them--they're a small pkg of Cray Pas (sp?).

I also have a package of Portfolio brand which states they are water soluble and I'm only now trying those in my newest piece--so far I've just layed down some color, blended with a tissue and my next step will be to try additional blending with a damp Q tip.

Tortillions maybe be helpful for detailing--so that's something else I want to try, other than my tightly rolled tissue.

Anyways, for the 'Carmen' piece I layed down the OP, blended it into the paper with tissue, then took a wipe over all. When it dried I started in with the CPs and they worked fine.

I plan to experiment some more -- the OP colors are so rich and the CPs seem to work fine in the mix. So, I'd suggest have fun, and play with your crayons!! :D

I like the Green, I don't recall seeing much green in your work before.
I've worked some with Oil Pastels before also and I did the same , Laid down color with Oil Pastels and cut out details with CP. I was somewhat happy with it

Thanks Dave. Now that you mention it, you're right, I don't use much green....funny, too, green is one of most favorite colors--go figure.....

Hi Ali,

If you want to see CP's used with pastels and ink, you can look at www.johnbaselmans.com. He is primarily a mixed media artist using inks, CP's, and pastels. He posts WIP's of most of his work. He starts with the ink, then adds the pastel, and then finishes with CP. There is a pull-down menu at hte bottom of the page that will take you directly to his WIP's.
