Cleaning an electric sharpener

Hi everybody,

I was wondering whether somebody could give me a suggestion on how to clean an electric sharpener.

I've been working on the 3-pencil color wheel, and noticed some smudges when layering the yellow. It turns out they are coming from sharpening the pencil - like Arlene says, at least once a minute, if not more often than that.

I do remove the shavings from the bottom tray, but I don't really know how to clean the inside area, where we put the pencil in.

Any suggestions?

I wouldn't recommend cleaning the inside. However, there are two key things you can do.

First, periodically sharpen a graphite pencil. I usually do this once every drawing session or two. It keeps the gears running smoothly and cleans things out.

Second, wipe or brush off your colored pencil everytime you sharpen it. Some use a paper towel. I attached a fluffy makeup brush to the top of my sharpener and run my pencil through it when I pull it out. Combined with use of a drafting brush to brush off my paper, I don't have the color smear problems.

I especially like the idea of attaching some brush to the sharpener. I have been using a brush to clean the pencil after sharpening, but your idea is awesome!

I didn't know about the graphite sharpening trick. I'll make sure I do that often.
