Has anyone done any CP work on papyrus? I have some small sheets and a very large sheet of darker papyrus. I have done painting on papyrus when I was in school but have not tried anything else. Just wondering. I am gonna give it a try and see what comes of it.
If you have worked with it before let me know what you thought or learned about it.
Here goes nothing!

I know that papyrus is very porous, but isn't it a bit smooth for cp? Please give it a try and show us! Do you know if it's archival??
The biblical writers liked it!!
I haven't ever tried it. Where do you find it? I may give it a shot.

I would think it is archival as alot of it has lasted a very long time. The stuff I have is brown. I have only used the lighter colored in the past but when I was looking for some for my class to use this was all I could find in Atlanta! So I had to buy both sheets!
Since it is made of plant fibers it is not too smooth. If anything I am concered about the actual texture. It is made by masicating layers of the stalks in alternating layers and letting them dry into sheets. It is suprisingly strong.
I have selected the "Eye of Horus" to test it out keeping with the egyptian origin of the paper.
Hezzy,
The local art guild here had a show in Sept. and one of the out of state exhibitors used mostly papyrus, on very beautiful african animal art. Her male lion face was extremely wonderful as was her elephants. I tried to talk with her about her use of cp's on papyrus but the timing was wrong. Too close to the end of the show, and I could tell since I wasn't going to purchase she was not interested in the conversation. :annoyed:
What I do know is that she used primarily light colored very large pieces 18 X 20 as an adverage. Not totally covering the piece in the background and letting images fad into it. She also used trimings for borders, framing with it floating on a black mat. She also used many burled wood frames as they went well with the subject matter and African feeling. She had a few American animals like squirrels and rabbits also, along with a very few egyptian pieces of cats and the like.
Hope this gives you some ideas, good luck and I'm waiting to see what you do with yours. I'm wondering about prices of papyrus, This artist said she gets it from art supply distributors but didn't suggest who.

Wait, Heather, that is the actual paper? It is very interesting. I'm looking for different surfaces to work on - I've worked on Bristol Smooth and Stonehenge, but would like some advice on different surfaces. I don't want to work on Wallis since it has too much of a sandpaper feel to it, I need to keep my pencils as long as possible, but some other ideas would be nice.

GloriaGloria I know the artist you're talking about. I've met her, seen her work and talked with her. She uses the it very effectively for her work. The drawings are alot rougher then I work, more like detailed sketches and from what I recall, it doesn't require any special treatment
