I'm thinking about doing this next. The first is the ref, the second is my idea for the crop.
What do you think?

take a good look again and think of the things i'm always saying about edges etc. also what's your focal point?

your right, I see now that several leaves are kissing the edges. The two center leaves are the focal point, I'll need to adjust the values of the other leaves to make the center two stand out. Is this crop better?

or this? and yes you'd have to make sure those edges aren't touching.

Here's what i have after 7 hours. I've done an underpainting of the orange leaves with celadon green, the more yellow leaves are greyed lavender. I've started on the grey background without using grey. So far it's cloud blue, periwinkle, and pumkin orange. 6 x 6 prizmas on stonehege.

update. I'm having trouble getting a good scan, but here goes. I've made a good start on the background, i'll come back to it to adjust values and add more layers once i get some color started on the leaves. For the background i've used cloud blue, periwinkle, pumpkin orange, celadon green, henna, violet blue, indigo blue, dark green, and black cherry, NO GREY.

Here's an update, starting to lay some color in the leaves. Haven't had a lot of time to work on it this week. I'm realizing that i'm really slow, over 15 hours so far and only 6 x 6!

composition knowledge comes with time. it's a matter of making lots of them, AND looking at great art (both contemporary and old) and trying to determine what and why a piece works compositionally. It also is a matter of reading up on it...there are some excellent books that explain it. check the comp forum for info on that.
