I love the mood and the tone of this photo and I have permission to draw it. I have only done one other landscape before and that was a looooooooong time ago. Does anyone think it needs to be changed in any way to add to its appeal? I was thinking of maybe adding two small birdie silhouettes near the sunset area. I would love opinions on the overall comp for this drawing. Thank you!

Hi Lori,
Unusual color for a sunset, has it been altered?
Lori when I opened this all I saw was fantasy...they look so surreal. Dunno about the birds but I can certainly see faeries skipping about under these canopies.

Lori,
This is such an unusal photo, one that drew me in and had me looking around it for a while. I love the way it was cropped and although I'm not one who has dabbled in many landscapes, this is one of those photos that almost demands to be drawn. I was caught up in the portion of the photo where the two trees further back show a definate horizon line, but it seems to disapear on the left by the sky -- interesting.
I'm with Toni about the sureal quality of the photo and don't see birds unless you change the dramatic feel of the photo, or make them just as intense as the rest of the photo.
Good luck -- this could be both a fun and challenging peice.

The surreal feel to it is what made me like it immediately. I will call it, "Just add Fairies."
Bill, the photographer did not say it was altered in any way, although it could have been. It looks like all that green grass color has been picked up in the sunset. Maybe the camera did that? Should I enhance it with a little more orangey?
Good point about the birds versus the feel of the piece. :)

WOW Lori, this is an amazing photo. It really appeals to me, I do having a liking for fantasy art and this is a great reference.
I think the light is from a building and not a sunset. This would perhaps explain the colour and shape of the light. I think I can see the outline of the roof of the building as well.
I am not sure about the composition aspects, and will think about more :D.
I agree with Christine it certainly a picture that demands to be drawn.
Looking forward to seeing what you make of it.
wow - that is an amazining picture - those trees are wonderful. The composition looks great to me. I think to not "destroy" the flow of the photo, the faries should be placed with much care in the right spots  For example I would not place anything on right (as we look at it) half of the picture
I am really looking forward to see this in cp, Lori :)

Thank you Dave and lene!
lene, I am not going to actually be adding any fairies into the drawing. It's just going to be the landscape as you see. I wanted to have the FEEL of fantasty (with these great trees and the beautiful setting) without adding any actual fairies to it.
Dave, what a cool photo manip!
Dave .... you should be working for the "Lord of the Rings-movie-people" .... ;) great path

No, not yet. I wanted to get all the opinions before I start (since I have a great weakness in the area of comp). I am busy tweaking my cowboy's face in the drawing of the coyboy carrying the doggie.

Lahree, LOVE THIS, it is so you. And what Dave did with the photo is wonderful. I definately see tiny sparkley fairies peaking in and out of the trees playing games with one another. This is an amazing photo as a photo, but would it still hold it's jaw dropping appeal as a landscape painting? Does that make sense? To me the composition that Dave made pulls you in and adding tiny fairies would keep you engaged. Can't wait to see what you do.

Well, the problem with adding fairies to the drawing is then I have the problem of how to do lighting---and that always is a problem. This is sunset and I am not sure how to portray the light on the fairies. I could have all the little fairies have their own glow and that's kinda hard to do, too. Sigh. :o

What do you think?
You mean just do little fairy magic lights instead of actually seeing the fairies themselves?
