Hey everyone!
Well, I am going to be quite greedy here, but I know we have some amazing talent here and being someone who can never get enough lessons... I'd like to send out some special requests for lessons / projects to some of our members.
(My appologies to our experts who aren't on this list. I'm sure I'll have more requests once I get to know everyone's work better)
Judy - I so miss your Art Appreciation / Art History lessons! Any chance you could do some for us here?
Lori - You know how much I love your Deco Art. Teach me! :D (especially how you create your line, movement and color in those works)
Dave Larson - I can't get enough of your Dramatic Colors in your portraits. I'd love to know how you decide on your pallets.
Bob Ebdon - Gotta see more of your CP and Ink. (I am still in awe over your Eilean Donan Castle)
Nicole Caulfield - How do you create that wonderful Ambience. (I love the softness and mood of your works)
Gayle Mason & Gemma - Anything about Drawing Animals would be great. (I'd love to learn about fur, eyes and capturing expressions)
Ivy - Please teach us how to take those great refrence photos!
Lumosart - You are awsome at Drawing Muscles. Any chance for some lessons?
Rollow - I know I have a lesson from you about cp on wood that still needs to be put on the site. My appologies for not having it posted.
I would love a lesson though on the technical aspects of choosing the right wood, priming it, any tricks for effects, and sealing it. Don't want much do I? ;)
Toni - I love your lessons in your limited pallets. I'd love to see a lesson on how you create those amazing curls and wonderful fly-away hair as well.
Virginia - You do so many things so well, but your gesture drawings are exiting. Could you do a lesson on dynamic movement and gesture drawings? Or a lesson on drawing children?
Well, I'm sure I'll come up with some more lessons I'd love to see. And I'm sure there are others that have thier requests as well. ;)
So.... any takers? I gotta have my lessons! :D
Have a ball everyone!

what great Ideas...are you asking for here, cpchallenge or both? If here, then once someone does the lesson let us know and we'll put it in the index. And if on cpchallenge, I think i'm going to add all those wonderful lessons at some point to our index here.
KarenCardinal

Well I definately would love these for CP Challenge, but I was actually asking for here.
Hey, if someone wants to do a lesson for both... I certainly wouldn't argue. ;)
btw: I do plan to update the Challenge eventually and I am going to be adding links to all your great projects Arlene. :D

This is a great idea!! I just posted the Boxer I've just started and I'll keep in mind what you have requested here when explaining how I do, fur, eyes, expression and so forth.

Hi
Karen, glad to hear that the CP-Challenge site will "start againg". It was the very first site I discovered on www concerning color pencils, one of the causes for me buying my first colorpencils  and I love the wonderful challenges on the site.... I've very frequently been visiting for updates :crybaby:
... it's very nice to have several cp-places to visit :D :bye1:

If I end up crashing through the floor into the basement, it'll be your fault Gemma and Dave. ;)
Have a ball with it!
PS: Thank you so much for the kind words about the Challenge lene! :blushing: I definately haven't given up on it and will be updating it!
And yes! It's terrific to have so many wonderful places for cp art! I get a real thrill everytime I find a new one. :D
Karen,
Thank you so much for thinking of me :D .
I'll try and do a little write up with my best tips for you.

Ivy, Thank you sooooo much!
Your photos are always so perfect... anything you could teach me (and everyone else too ;) ) would be very appreciated! :D
I hope your husband is doing well!
I have been thinking about you two.
Do take care of yourself too!
Karen,
He's doing as well as could be expected at this point. He's ready to go back to work...lol...but the doctors say no, not yet. Gotta take some time off, rest and rehab his heart a bit and make sure that everythings gonna be a-ok. All indicators at this point say he's gonna be just fine :) .
Still it is a bit of a upheaval around here, so you can certainly understand if it takes me a bit to get it done ;) .

Good night... are all men like that or is it only the ones who have heart attacks? My husband actually got into an argument with one of the nurses in the emergency room because he wouldn't get off the cellphone (he just had to call all his clients to let them know why he wouldn't be in for a day or two  ).
I'm so glad to hear that your husband will be fine! :)
Believe me I can understand the nerves, anxiety, and exaustion that something like this will cause for you. You take all the time you need.
Make your husband take care of himself. And don't forget to take care of yourself too!
Enjoy everything!

speaking of the CP challenge, is that going to be up again soon ?
i keep checking the site to see what is happening !
:P
and i would love to see some lessons on interesting backgrounds / effects or subjects such as doing grass or leaves the ground with lots of rocks and straw or shadows or stone... etc. I find these types of things particularly hard to do and this could be something i could directly relate to a piece i would be working on.

Hey Belinda!
*Sigh* I really really do promise that the CPC will be updated!
I am going to dig through my files to find Ron's information so I can put his lesson, "Colored Pencil on Wood" on the site. I'd thought a couple times about putting my lesson about skin tones on black paper on the site, but I think everyone's already seen it.
It's going to be a little while before there is a full update though. I still have a few scripts to finish and I have to finish Ann's forum, update 3 other sites, and draw a couple new illustrations for a job. It will get done though... really!
Great suggestion for some more lessons here!
My brain is too fuzzy right now... I'm not sure who to ask. Do you have anyone in mind?
btw: Are you subscribed to Ann Kullberg's emag "From my Perspective (http://annkullberg.com/zine.htm)"? She covers tons of great stuff in her lessons and critiques (including backgrounds).
Keep having fun with it all!

Hey Karen!
Thanks for thinking of me! :D I do believe I will take you up on the idea. I am not sure how to go about it.....I got to think on that one. I suppose you want the lesson to be longer than....."I draw a nekkid chick, give her long flowing hair and all the other lines in the drawing have to be flowing and swishy."  Wha? You want MORE than that?? :(

LOL! Yea a little more might be helpful. ;)
The nekkid chick pictures are my usual illustration commissions (although for some reason they're usually carrying a sword or a bazooka ;) ). For some reason though, mine never come out with the movement and grace that your works have.
I needs my lesson here! :D

Heidi, I'm so glad you're excited. I am too! :D
It's overwhelming when you think about the talent and expertese that we have here. So much to learn... so little time.
As a beginner to this medium, I would like to suggest that you go through the advice in the Index of past threads (http://scribbletalk.com/showthread.php?p=12#post12) and work through Arlene's Colored Pencil Projects. You won't believe how much you will learn from those.
...and if you have a request, just shout it out. :D
Enjoy!

I have several of my old WIPs. I'm slowly working on getting them to post here. If there are any other special requests, let me know. I know I haven't done any pieces in the past year, but there are old ones. Plus, some "homework" assignments would be good to get me started up again.

I'm glad this thread is here! I'd really appreciate a lesson on the different types of perspective, and how to work with them or decide what to use. In particular, I'm interested in learning about what to do in a large piece, where things are at a distance from the main figure, and need to be well-rendered, but not over-detailed. Aerial perspective, too, would be helpful to me!
Toni - I love your lessons in your limited pallets. I'd love to see a lesson on how you create those amazing curls and wonderful fly-away hair as well.
Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!! I thought I got out of this at at that other place!!! :D LOLOLOLOL......
ahem... so your asking for TWO tutorials? One on hair and one one on the limited palette? Yeah, I know I could combine them, but only if thats what I was working on anyway. Not sure what I've got coming up human wise.
How about I'll do it (ackkkk now shes got me good  I'm committed or I've been committed :o :D ? not sure which it is...)
but it'll have to wait until my CPSA piece is finished?

Well, I would love to know a little more about the particulars of how to use cp on wood. What wood is best? Do I need to prime it or can I just start drawing on it? Do I need to seal it? Will I get wax bloom when I use wood?

Thank you again so much!

This is a great idea. Is it perhaps possible that we can make this into a Starting with CP 101 "online course" with exercises and possible an Advanced CP 201 "online course"
Idea being that anybody can start at lesson 1 at any stage and can work through all the lessons (Threads) on their own pace, getting guydance from guides online. I know this will be a lot of work, but would be a great resource for all of us.

I think that is an outstanding idea. I know my niece would love to have something like that online where she can go and learn, from step 1 forward. I know I myself could learn a few things as well, especially from tj, karen, arlene, and so forth, oh yes, and barns also.

Wow! So many great ideas! That's why I love being around smart people. :D
So to recap:
Gemma is already giving us great step by step advice with her work "the Boxer".
Dave is giving us some great insites to color.
Gayle has promised to do some new cat eyes lessons for us... Yeah!
Ivy has said she will write up some great tips for us (as soon as she's able) so we (or maybe it's just me) can actually learn how to take a good reference picture.
Lori's going to teach us how to draw swishy nekkid chicks... oh I mean... she's going to teach us how to create Art Nouveau / Deco works.
Nicole is going to show us how she makes those wonderfully moody atmospheres in her work.
LeAnne is posting all kinds of wonderful portrait and figure lessons. (As long as she remembers to link them in the index ;) )
Toni's going to teach us how to limit our pallets and make the most fabulous hair (as soon as she gets her entry done... for THIS year's show :p )
Ron is going to teach us how to work on wood, then hopefully I won't look like a dufus asking the guy at the Lowes which wood works best with prismacolors.
Thank you so much everyone!
We also have requests for:
Interesting backgrounds / effects or subjects such as doing grass or leaves, the ground with lots of rocks and straw or shadows or stone... etc.
Lessons on different types of perspective, and how to work with them or decide what to use. In particular, in learning about what to do in a large piece, where things are at a distance from the main figure, and need to be well-rendered, but not over-detailed. Also aerial perspective.

...And we GOTTA talk Bill into doing a lesson on his barns! ;)
Werner, I think you have a wonderful idea there! I'm not exactly sure how it would be implimented though... that's why I always hang around with smart people.
Arlene has a lot of great projects listed in the index now that ALL beginners should work through.
I'd be willing to help with anything that needed done if everyone thinks this could be feasable.
Keep those great ideas coming!
Aren't we having fun! :D
PS: Ron, I don't know if you could learn anything from me. I want to learn from you. Thank you very much for the compliment though. I appreciate it!

I would be happy to do a lesson in my version of "circulism". Thank you Meisie for thinking of me. :bye1:
What I wonder is how is that different than a WIP? Or are we talking the same thing with maybe more info included in the WIP than normally you find? And are we supposed to be putting it somewhere special with links? I just saw the comment about LeAnne not linking it to the index. Didn't make sense to me...
I am not the only one who does "circulism" work....vltz (Virginia) does wonderful portraits in circulism, and how she approaches the technique may be different than my approach. I have not tackled a full on portrait in circulism only some figure work. Mostly I do still life and florals. Maybe we could get vltz to do a lesson on circulism in portraiture also?

Gotcha!
Well, Pat Averill has a fabulous Canal kit at http://annkullberg.com/landscape.htm. The water is still and reflective, but it's definately worth checking out.
<Sigh> I'm sure there's some good demonstrations out there on the net or in books somewhere, but I haven't been able to keep up with everything lately.
Hopefully someone here will come along and do something for us.
Question: How do you do a 'lesson'?
I feel like I should be the last person to give one because I just do a lot of experiments, playing around...I don't really plan or think out my projects, just jump into them and if it works, it works, if not, then on to something else.
I don't know how I'd translate what I do into a lesson. Is there a formula or template on how to?
Sorry if I sound so duh, but I'm totally lost with how to do this!
V
KarenCardinal
03-09-2005, 08:33 PM
LOL! You sound like me Virginia... make a bunch of messes, blend them all together and cross your fingers. :D
I don't really think there is a "formula" for doing a lesson. Every artist creates their artwork differently and teaches their lessons differently.
Perhaps if you had some people ask you the questions on their mind, it could give you a direction to go.
I'll start... When you are creating your peices do you lay down any kind of outline on your paper, or do you have your sketch under your paper on some kind of light board so you can see it through the paper... or do you simply create your outline out of all those tiny circles?
Do you think circulism is a good technique for someone who needs to learn to loosen up with thier artwork?
Well, that's 2 questions to answer. I'm sure others have their own questions for you.
Remember the only thing you HAVE to do when you give a lesson is....
Have fun with it! :D
So--like a WIP with written details/explanations?
V

Along with backgrounds, could you include "how to decide what to use for a background" (for people & animal portraits ,etc)? Thank you!!!
KarenCardinal
03-09-2005, 10:35 PM
Hmmmmm... backgrounds? That sounds more like Arlene's territory. ;)
What exactly are you wanting to learn?
Techniques for drawing backgrounds?
How to soften backgrounds so your subject stands out?
How to decide what kind of background to put in? (I think that last one would be very tough to teach. I don't know if any 2 artists would always agree about what to put in... and what to leave out of the background)
Sorry, it's late and I didn't sleep last night. Could you be a little more specific please.

Folks if you're looking to start a new project for everyone (such as the ova project or Nancy's excellent new project on metal), I ask that you do three things.
1. Send it to a moderator before posting. (Moderators are: Elankat, Toni, Bill C)
2. Post your project only in 1 forum.
3. Email the mod you showed it to to put a link in the index under projects.
Thank You,
Arlene

Ok, Ok...one last thing. (for now! ;) )
The projects are for everyone to try and to do. If somene posts a WIP (work in project) please DO NOT COPY OR REPRODUCE that WIP in any form, unless you've received permission from the original artist. They are just for showing techniques you might want to try.
Thank You,
Arlene

I'd thought a couple times about putting my lesson about skin tones on black paper on the site, but I think everyone's already seen it.
I don't think I saw it! And my "chill" project in between commissions is an Elvis portrait for a friend of mine... on a black background! I'm going for more of a tonal piece (umbers, beige, & white); however, I would love to learn more about portraiture on a black background.... I'm learning a lot just working on this piece. It is totally different than working on a white or light background!

Hey Angela!
I did add the lesson here and I think LeAnne added the link in the index for me. Take a look.
I hope you post your portrait when you start it. I can't wait to see it! :D

Great! I can't wait to check it out!
As for starting the portrait... Already did. Or are you talking about the Elvis piece? I even made it through the ugly stage without throwing it away in disgust. I'll have to scan it and show everyone what it looks like about half way through. Not so sure it looks that much like Elvis though... :annoyed:
**bump**
Since I have a tendency to be exceptionally long-winded at times...(who'd have thought it, eh?) and I haven't found a "check message length" button yet...is there a limit to what one can stuff into one post? I fear that what I'm working on is rather lengthy at the moment, and I need to know if I need to split it up into other sections or if it can be one big post instead...
:) :) :)
Ivy...who is currently working on the 2nd revision of her lesson...errr article...yeah it's more like an article...

YEA IVY! :D
I'm so tickled that you're going to do your lesson... or should we call it your thesis? ;)
I'm not sure what the limit on a post is. If you have to split it up between multiple posts... well I guess we could deal with that. ;)
I'm just so excited to see your lesson! Can you tell? ;)
:bounce: :dance3: :dance3: :dance3: :bounce:
THANK YOU! :D
lol lol lol ... I'm just sorry its been taking so long to get done! Guess I have a few things to say about it after all!
Though, I'm not sure what to call it either at the moment.
Hopefully it'll be something worth reading at least!
:D :D :D

Karen:
I love the lessons on CPC. Could you maybe have some lessons in the future on running water, like waterfalls, and water running over rocks? Another really good challenge is doing clear glass, like clear bottles sitting in front of colored bottles or other objects. Just a couple of ideas. Hope that you don't mind. Thanks.

Hi Martha,
The easiest way to draw glass is to draw what you see and not what you think you see. The best way to explain this is to think of a childs drawing of a person. The child has drawn what they think they see...usually the person is facing forward, but both feet are turned to one side.
We tend to think we see the outline of the glass, but if we look closely what we see is the colors and shadows that are behind the glass...usually distorted and a bit less clear in color. Sometimes there's the reflected color in there too.
Isolate the shapes and you'll have it.

Hey Martha!
Thanks so much for the lessons request! I've had the glass lesson on a request que for awhile trying to find an artist who has the time to do it. I made up a quick mini lesson of tricks I learned about drawing glass, but it's not full enough for a Challenge lesson.
Arlene's advice is (of course) exactly right... you have to avoid drawing what you think a glass looks like and draw exactly what you see.
Thanks also for the running water request! That was not one I had on the books so I will add it right now and start asking artists about doing it.
Great lesson ideas! Thanks again! :D
