I've found a great book that explains how to use Photoshop to do the things that artists want to do.

Creative Computer Tools for Artists by Jann Lawrence Pollard and Jerry James Little
(Using software to develop drawings and paintings)

Here's the Amazon link for a photos of the cover and table of contents, but if it doesn't work, just go to www.amazon.com and type in the title of the book.

Here's the chapter titles:

Techniques and Tools - an overview of what all the buttons and icons do (covers both PS Elements and the full-scale program)
Working with one photo
Working with layers - It explains layers in such a way that even an artist can understand it :D
Combining Photos
Scanning Sketches
Using Digital Effects

I've ordered my own copy ($7.20 used), but right now am reading the one I found at my library. I know a fair amount about Photoshop Elements, but this book is going to really help me use it to work on composition and lighting effects, combine photo references, play with color, and just a lot of things I hadn't thought of on my own.

It covers value studies, cropping, changing colors, composing on the screen, "painting" with the computer, producing abstracts from photo references, using the texture and special effects filters.... there's a lot packed into 144 pages.

There are lots of pictures that illustrate the steps written about in the text (a must for a right-brained artist!)

I highly recommend this book.
