what are you going to do with it compositionally?

Bill C

Arlene brings out the composition hammer :bangin:

I plan on cropping it slightly, like this:

Hi Bill,

I think I'd crop it something like this. ( and I'm not the best at comps either)

To me both the head and the tail are focal points in this pic... and I'm not exactly sold on the lower right corner hill of snow or that diagonal dark tree branch behind the deer, but I have no suggestions for either area ( 'cept make sure that branch appears to be behind the deer in your drawing...)

Back to bed for me now
Good Luck!

thanks Judy,
I don't like the branch either, I plan on leaving it out. I'm experimenting with various crops.

I'M HAVING TOO MUCH FUN WITH THIS It's so fun it must be illegal. I feel like my eyes have just been opened. Creating color with cp this way is totally new to me. Beautiful, rich color is appearing befor my eyes. Probably nothing new to you pros but I find I'm thinking totally different about how to do cp by creating the colors instead of looking for them in the pencil box. I'm DEFINETLY going to do more of these ryb projects! In case you can't tell I'm really excited.

here's tonights update, still more to go........

here's tonights update, the deer is just about finished. Now on to the bg, I normally would work on the bg more before this stage but I've been having too much fun with the deer to stop

Bill C
02-16-2005, 07:42 PM
put it into grayscale and i bet you'll see the deer isn't finished. ;)

Bill C
02-16-2005, 07:43 PM
I'm sure your right arlene , I should know better than to make a statement like that! LOL I'm going to get the bg going and then I'll check the gs.

thanks!

Bill C

the body is much better with values, but take a good look at the face. It's flat and lacking values....look at the b/w to see.

Bill C
02-16-2005, 07:45 PM
your right arlene, I noticed after posting that the face still needed work. I've been building the values slooowly, since I can't use other colors to lighten if I go to far. I'll get back to her once the bg is finished.

thanks to everyone for the nice comments, this is fun!

Bill C

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Worked on it a little more. I added a few more leaves and worked on values on the leaves and the deer.
I've learned so much from this project about color. I've learned to create a range of colors using only three pencils, I've also realized that different colors are obtained depending on the order of application of the ryb. I love the richness that can be obtained from a limited pallet, creating colors instead of just selecting them from the box adds so much, perhaps because of the number of layers required using this technique.

Since this was a project I followed the rules, however I would have liked to add just a few more colors.

For example:
I would have used white for more than just highlights

I would have added a dark to help build the dark values, ind blue or black grape.

I would have used black for the eyes and nose

Finally, I would have added a brown for the branches, it was difficult to do the fine lines with all the layers needed to build the color.

The way I will approach cp from now on has been changed. I will use a limited pallete and plan how I want to build colors. I enjoyed this more than any other piece I've done. I'll definetly be adding this one to my banner (u listening pixie? )

more darks ...also where's your light coming from?

Bill C

There is really no strong light direction in the ref, the strongest is from slightly left of the viewers perspective. Where do I need more darks, the deer? thanks

take a look at the grayscale. notice for example the legs...which legs are coming forward? I'd also like to see a few more darkest darks on the deer...and a few more highlights...remember a highlight doesn't have to be pure white to be a highlight...a lightened up version of the tint can be a highlight too. ;)

i notice on the snow you shadowed the whole area behind the snowbank...does that mean the light is coming from the front? because if it was coming from the left side as you say, then the shadow wouldn't be across the whole area and the deer would cast a definite shadow, even if light...another thing is what time of day is this? that too can affect your shadows.

thanks arlene , I'll work on it some more. Your right about the shadow behind the snow bank, I was trying to make sure it was well defined and overdid it.

it's awesome to have arlene and the other great teachers here! I ususally think my work is done before it really is. For instance, I went back to the drawing board last night and pushed the darks on the deer as arlene suggested, it really helped. I'll post another update when I get home Wednesday.

Bill C

and another update worked on the values on the deer, deepened the darks. also worked on the shadows in the snow.

Wow! Bill, this looks awesome! I can definitely see how building the deer in red, yellow, and blue creates a more visually stimulating piece. The colors of the deer are richer than you could get with just browns. I really want to try this project when I have some time!

Turned out wonderful. A daunting task!! I want to try one of these ryb projects--(as soon as I finish the complementary graisille project on my drawing board, which I will finish after catching up with spring yard work.)
I love the deer's fur--definitely more interesting than brown, tho I know I would miss those brown pencils badly. It might be hard not to cheat just a little :D

You have done a great job on this Bill, and your enthusiasm is convincing me I should be trying this. Will have to make the time:)
